 Lesson plan for teaching speaking
Ordering the Food

Grade level: Beginner, 5th grade

The number of class: 24 students

The type of program: communication

Duration: 2 hours (meet twice a week, 1 hour each time)

Goals: 
1. To expose students the topics relating to the food
2. To encourage students to use basic sentences to order the food

Objectives: 
1. Students will be able to be familiar with the name of food.
2. Students will be able to express likes and dislikes
3. Students will be able to order food in a restaurant.

Materials: Handouts for each activity, Flash cards, Sentence strips, audio tape
and Index cards

First Day

Warm-up: “What do you like?” Activity (10 min)
- Let students draw the pictures of food which they like
- Students can write down the name of food if they know

During Activity: “Flash cards” Activity (20 min)
- Teacher shows flash cards of food
- Teacher asks students the name of food
- Teacher says the name of food and let students repeat after her/him
- Teacher gives flash cards to students
- Students who get flash cards are asked to go in front of the class
- Teacher asks ‘What is this?’ with pointing the flash cards
- Students answer
- Teacher checks whether students identify the name of food

Post Activity: “Do you like ~?” Activity (20 min)
- Teacher gives examples to students with flash cards;
‘Do you like pasta?’ / ‘Yes, I do. – No, I don’t.’
- Students are asked to repeat after teacher
- Teacher asks one of students ‘Do you like pizza?’ with flash cards
- The student is asked to answer the question ‘Yes, I do.’ or ‘No, I don’t.’
- Teacher paraphrases the student’s answer;
‘She/He likes pizza.’ or ‘She/He doesn’t like pizza.’
- Teacher gives students handout “Do you like ~?
- Students are asked to do this activity which is similar to ‘find someone
who’

Evaluation: Teacher asks volunteers to retell based on their survey (10 min);
‘I like pizza.’ ‘Agnes doesn’t like pizza.’
‘I like steak.’ ‘Mikyeong likes steak.’


Second Day

Warm-up: “Bingo” Activity (10 min)
- Teacher gives handout to students
- Students are asked to choose the name of food on the board and write down
in each box
- Students go around and ask other students ‘Do you like ~?’
- If partner says ‘Yes, I do.’ and both of them cross out the box
- If partner says ‘No, I don’t.’ and they should ask other students
- If next partner ask the same item which the student already crossed out, the
student should say ‘No, I don’t.’
- One of the students gets two lines and then the activity will be finished

During Activity: “Role play” Activity (20 min)
- Students are asked to listen to the tape
- Teacher gives a modeling with sentence strips
- Students repeat after teacher
- Students are asked to go in front of the class with flash cards
- Students use the dialogue and they can see sentence strips on the board.

Post Activity: “Information Gap” Activity (20 min)
- Teacher divides students into pairs
- Pairs have two different menus
- One of the students is a waiter and the other is a customer
- Students use the dialogue which they learned
- Students should take turns to order the food
- Students should order three different kids of food which both of them
have on the menu


Evaluation: Teacher asks volunteers to do their information gap activity again.
(10 min)

* Teacher should be noting common error but not doing much error correction during the
practice time.
* Teacher can encourage students to go to restaurant with their parents and order the food
in English.
